 Renee

Diamonds and Guns - A Review

What a fun movie! I can honestly say that if you
don't laugh just once in this movie, your sense of
humour has gone on a holiday. Slapstick comedies don't
float my boat but this is such a good movie and the
slapstick is so well done. Sometimes the humour in this
movie is so understated and other times it just hits you
over the head. I think it needs more than one
viewing to catch all the jokes.
Renee's timing is PERFECT. She can do comedy so well
and she shows her versatility in this movie. I don't
know much about production values in movies but I do
know when I've had a rollicking good time watching one.
This is one of those times. I would happily watch this
movie again.

About The Movie:
In this romantic comedy, set in Las Vegas, "Diamonds
& Guns" follows best friends Ashley(Renee O'Connor) and
Bria as they set off to change their luck. From the
Sunset Strip to the Vegas Strip, they cannot seem to
escape their troubles. In a comedy of errors, they find
themselves wrapped up with the mob, chased by a hitman,
and falling in love with the least likeliest guys. What
happens in Vegas...just may alter their fortunes
forever. Who will make it out alive? Who will end up
with who? Place your bets... "Diamonds & Guns"

Some highlights:
- Ashley (Renee) dancing and singing while wearing
Mickey mouse ears...very off key and just so cute!
- Ashley in the pink outfit...
- Ted Raimi in a cameo as the land lord...who
signs his name as Land Lord! LOL!
- The porter taking their "luggage" to the
honeymoon suite was hysterical. The scene is so
understated and you nearly miss the point until you
realise they don't have luggage and it's just two
sweaters on the luggage cart!
- You CAN get sick eating tofu and beans...
- Dramamine does NOT cure food poisoning! LOL!
- There are 18 holes on a golf course...heh.
Slapstick at it's best....
- I don't find bodily functions jokes all that
amusing but I couldn't help but laugh - it's
Renee and you just don't expect it which only makes
the scene all the more funny.
- Ashley "playing" with the biday...
- Watch for the Ashley Doll...heh
- Kitchen performance art...
- Elvis the Celebrant...love the jumpsuit!
- Kittens Kittens Kittens - MEOW!
Hmm moments...
- A warning for the kiddies - One scene does have
some parts of a porn movie playing while Ashley
(Renee) is watching. Nothing too iffy but it is
rather jarring (although it's a tad funny watching
Renee watching the porn movie).
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. If you want a good
laugh, this is going to be a movie that will do that.
You can't go wrong, Nurse Frankie says so! <g>
Congratulations to Renee and the rest of the team
behind this movie. It was well worth the wait.

 My
copy of Diamonds and Guns arrived - it swam across
pretty quickly and I'll be watching it this weekend! A
review will follow. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

to call it DaG for obvious reasons). Renee - it's no
big surprise. This fandom will follow you to hell

EVERYTHING you do. This fandom will crawl on
broken glass to support both you and Lucy. Just one

Renee has a new video on her site about the release of
Diamonds and Guns and a new message. Renee was thinking
of having the movie downloaded via her website but has
decided to go with an actual dvd. There will be two
versions - one will be sold from Renee's site and
autographed by Renee (way cool) and the other will be by
a major distributor and contain bonus material (the
limited release version won't have the bonus material)

Diamonds and Guns Movie Update
The following is from Missy Good:
Folks - a couple weeks back I asked for people to go and
click on IMDB under Renee's film Diamonds and Guns, to
show interest in the project. Well, there was interest.
:-) So, when Renee gets back from filming her Scifi
movie, we'll be able to purchase a copy as a download to
help that project along.
Thanks to everyone for clicking, and I'm looking
forward to seeing the film after seeing the clippies of
it at the last con. So keep your eye out for
announcements on when and where to download.

- Joe LoDuca has finished the music for the film
- Renee is currently working on the titles for the
movie
- The movie will be released straight to DVD with
a special thank you to all the Xena fans who bought
photos and other items which Renee put on ebay to
get enough money to finish the film.

Diamonds and Guns and she said she had finally
finished it. "Now I have to learn how to sell it."
She said it was a funny movie that she thought we
would like-and that she had added funny sound
effects to it.

She told us that Diamonds and Guns was finally
finished. Now she has to learn to sell it, so the
saga isn't quite over yet. But she hopes we'll
finally get to see it sometime this year. She's very
proud of it. She's also hoping to do more producing
as well as acting, starting with vehicles for
herself or for her friends.

Some Renee Corrections from the Con
Received corrections of the Renee Q&A info which
was posted yesterday. The corrections are from Renee -
that information was not quite right (oops sorry Renee).
Below are Renee's corrections:
- Not doing a comedy with the diamonds and guns
gang. Don't know where that came from...
January 2006
Renee attended the 2006 Xena convention where she
said the following about the movie:
- Someone asked her about "Diamonds and Guns",
when it would be ready. She said that there had been
a split among the little group of people who made
it. That she and the "girl producer" were on one
side and the director, the writer and the other
producer were on the other. One of the writers
pulled out. The other producer also left. So now
it's kind of up to her.
"This project was not my baby to begin with. But I
was left with it." She talked about how she had
pulled people in from Xena. Ted Raimi had been
pulled in to direct. A cinematographer, an editor, a
composer from Xena, all good friends of hers were
helping with the movie. "And you guys give so much
support."
"My relationship with them is more important than me
getting tired and just walking away. This has been
such a lesson in staying power. Perseverance.
Keeping your word. Learning to ask for help."

interview about the movie
Renee: I just finished producing a digital film
called “Diamonds and Guns” with my producing
partners and I’m acting in it. I’m sort of a
supporting character because I wanted to focus more
on the producing and then we’re working on another
one and I’m either going to act or direct. I’m not
sure yet. Probably act in it. Working with digital
media gives you the freedom to produce and not after
to wait for a certain amount of financing.

"Diamonds & Guns

her to Vegas because she has an audition to play a
'cat.' She thinks she's auditioning for a production
of the Broadway musical. The show turns out to be
'Kittens.'"
"The movie is a
romantic comedy about two ladies who end up in Las
Vegas and find true love. One's an American, the
other's a New Zealander. Bria, the New Zealander,
played by Helena Beaven, is about to be deported and
is trying to stay in the United States."
"She ends up
marrying Francis who's the son of a casino owner.
But Francis is engaged to be married the next day to
the daughter of a rival casino owner. They're trying
to create a truce by marrying the son and the
daughter. However, they're absolutely wrong for each
other."

The following is

Filmed the video
interview with Renee on Friday about her work on
Diamonds and Guns. Now I know where the bloopers
come from during the filming of TV shows and movies.
I had to repeat my opening line for a two-shot of us
sitting there. Having to look at Renee and repeat
something we'd already done cracked me up. That gave
me the giggles. And when I kept a straight face, she
broke up. I think we did it nine times before we got
it right. (grin) Same thing happened when she was
feeding me lines off camera to get reaction shots
from me. I heaved a big sigh to shake off a bad line
reading and she cracked up. That started us all over
again with the giggles. She was no help at all.
(grin) I think we're going to have a blooper
section. (grin) She had some great stories to tell
especially about getting caught playing a video game
when she was supposed to be getting into costume for
the next scene (see photo above) and also guerilla
shooting on the streets of LA. I'll have a VHS copy
with time code of the footage tomorrow and start the
editing.

Guns Movie News - from Renee via Missy Good
The movie
"Diamonds and Guns" begins a seven-day shoot at the
Riviera in Las Vegas (Renee indicates this will be a
closed set so those of you thinking of going...don't
Renee said about
the movie "Movie is looking good, especially for
filming on a DV. Very funny cast. Would you believe
I play a lady who has food poisoning or is high on
valium for most of the film? I think I am having
more fun than anyone else."

The comedy
"Diamonds and Guns," starring Renée O'Connor (alias
"Xena: Warrior Princess' " longtime sidekick
Gabrielle), begins a seven-day shoot at the Riviera,
with locations ranging from the parking garage to
the pool, the convention center rooftop to the
casino, according to the Riviera's John Neeland.
Writer Dawn
Higginbotham, who's also co-producing the project,
describes the farce as " `Swingers' with girls" and
" `Romeo and Juliet,' Vegas-style," centering on two
friends (O'Connor and Helena Beaven) whose one last
fling turns into a comedy of errors.
To that end, "we
wanted to stick to the classy-style, old-school"
Vegas look, according to Higginbotham, which
explains why "Diamonds and Guns" wound up at the
Riviera.

from Sharon Delaney/Creation Entertainment:
Renee will begin
filming an independent feature-length film called
"Diamonds and Guns" early this summer. It will be
shot in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Directed by Chris
Dollard, with a script by Dawn Higginbotham (from a
story by Dawn and Helena Beaven who are producing
their first full-length film), it is a comedy about
two friends -- from America and New Zealand -- who
go to Las Vegas to find true love. It is being shot
digitally with an eye toward film festivals and
future distribution.
Renee said, "I
chose this script out of all the ones I've been
looking at because it was one of the funniest I'd
read. It has an energy on the page which I hope
translates to the screen and the audience. It came
to me by way of Aaron Morton who did the lighting on
"Dangerous Prey," the Xena episode I directed. Aaron
did the lighting on a movie called "Nemesis Game"
and introduced me to the guys who wrote, produced
and directed that movie. They in turn introduced me
to Helena. It all began with Xena."

mentioned in his report what Renee will be doing
workwise: Renee is currently working on an
independent film. She says it's a 'dark comedy'. She
isn't going to do Shakespeare this summer because of
this film but that doesn't mean she isn't going to
do it next summer (too early to tell). She plans on
directing a film based on a book. She didn't say
what the book was about but that it's going to
happen down the road. I gather that meant next year
since she's really busy this year. She's still going
to Europe for the Strong Women of Sci-Fi convention.
